As part of my ICT A-Level teaching last year I begin the creation of an ICT modelling kit to include a vast array of components, peripherals and technologies. I’ve created a little icon and information slip for just about everything under the sun!
So we have the components of a PC – motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, etc. and then other things such as website types (photo sharing/cloud storage/etc.), software types (applications/games/OSes/etc.) and data transfer mediums (3G/4G/Wi-Fi/etc.).
Teachers could use the kit to allow kids to recreate the communications between internal and external components, as well as showing where speed bottlenecks can occur – I’ve added data transfer rates and memory bandwidths to the appropriate protagonists – so for example you can instantly see that you couldn’t stream a Blu-Ray movie over a Wireless-G connection, or why DDR2 memory would slow a GDDR3 videocard.
If anyone would like a copy of the Photoshop files to print their own, please drop me a line.
